HENDERSON, N.C. (AP) -- A North Carolina school system says it has revised its school lunch menu because of the federal government shutdown.

  • Vance Co. Schools has reduced its menu to the minimum level
  • Students will now receive a main dish, bread, two vegetables, a fruit, and milk
  • The revised menu is due to the federal government shutdown

Vance County Schools officials announced on their Facebook page that starting Jan. 21 the menu will be reduced to the minimum level.

Under the revised menu, students will receive one main dish, bread, two vegetables, one fruit and milk. No fresh produce will be included, except at elementary schools as part of the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program, which will be reduced to two days a week.

There will be no bottled water and juice after the current stock is consumed, and no ice cream will be available.

Officials said the system's nutrition program for students is self-supporting with federal funds providing meals.
