LUMBERTON, N.C. – An investigator is out of a job following an investigation into how the Hania Aguilar investigation was handled.

  • Two investigators who were previously suspended from the Robeson County Sheriff's Office are no longer with the department.
  • One person resigned and retired.
  • The other one was fired on Thursday. 

According to a release from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, Investigator Darryl McPhatter was terminated as of 9:00 a.m. Thursday.

No official cause was given for the termination, but an investigation began into McPhatter after evidence from a 2016 rape may have taken Michael McLellen, the man accused of murdering 13-year-old Hania Aguilar, off the streets.

Another deputy under investigation, 34-year veteran Major Anthony Thompson, resigned and retired on January 9.
