DURHAM, N.C.-- City leaders want police to act after learning of a series of crimes targeting Hispanics.

  • The latest incident happened Saturday at the Valley Terrace Apartments
  • Chief C.J. Davis told city leaders she'll immediately increase patrols in the community
  • City Manager Tom Bonfield reminds people that police aren't immigration enforcement, and victims should never be afraid to report a crime

The latest incident happened Saturday at the Valley Terrace Apartments. An attempted armed robbery left three victims shot during a birthday party. Last month, police responded to more than a dozen armed robberies with Hispanic victims.

“The situation at the party last weekend is something that probably heightened everybody and that this has got to stop,” said City Manager Tom Bonfield.

Spectrum News obtained emails from the Durham Police Department. Chief C.J. Davis told city leaders she'll immediately increase patrols in the community and plan a public forum for early next year.

Community advocates say there are a few reasons robbers believe Hispanics may make easy targets.

“They're not used to having cards or checks sometimes. Many of them don't have documents and they feel afraid,” said Reverend Habacuc Ramos-Huerta of Iglesia El Buen Pastor in Durham.

However, Bonfield reminds people that police aren't immigration enforcement, and victims should never be afraid to report a crime.
