DURHAM, N.C. - Durham Police officers are hoping the public can help in providing information with six unsolved hit-and-run crimes that span the past three years.

The most recent happened in June of this year and the oldest dates back to May of 2015.

Investigator Gabe Munter says it's important to stop and call 911 if you're involved in hitting someone with your car.

"I think there's a common misconception out there that if you hit a pedestrian you're automatically at fault. I would say a fair portion of our cases has been the driver was not at fault but by leaving the scene you're automatically committing felony hit and run. When you go to get your car repaired to try to hide what happened you're committing felony destruction of evidence, also most importantly you're taking away the person's chance of possibly being saved by emergency medical care," Munter said.

June 18, 2018 - Salvador Omar Sanchez, 44, of 901 Chalk Level Road was fatally injured as he was walking across North Duke Street between Horton Road and Fairfield Road at around 2:40 a.m. A northbound vehicle struck Sanchez and left the scene. Investigators believe the vehicle may be a black or very dark 2008-2012 Honda Accord or similar vehicle. The vehicle likely sustained damage to its front bumper, headlight assembly and hood and possibly to its windshield and the driver’s side A-pillar. The vehicle appears to have tinted windows on the rear sides and back. The vehicle was missing its front left hubcap immediately following the accident.

February 28, 2018 – Levonne Rish, 59, was walking on North Hyde Park Avenue near Lowry Street around 9 p.m.  when she was struck by a vehicle. The driver left the scene before officers arrived. Ms. Rish died several days later as a result of her injuries. Investigators are trying to locate a silver van and a black or dark-colored sedan seen in the area at the time of the accident.

December 13, 2017 - Carlos Humberto Arita-Reyes, 67, of Durham was riding his bicycle home from work shortly before 11 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle in the 5300 block of Garrett Road. Mr. Arita-Reyes later died as a result of his injuries. Investigators are looking for a 2005-2008 Toyota Corolla sedan with damage to the front hood/bumper on the driver’s side in this hit-and-run investigation.

November 4, 2017 – A man was crossing Holloway Street near Hoover Road around 11:45 p.m. when he was struck by a Ford Explorer, which left the scene. The pedestrian suffered critical injuries in the accident. Investigators later found the vehicle, but have not been able to identify the driver.

March 6, 2017 – Willie Jackson, 63, of Durham was struck by a vehicle around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of South Roxboro Street and Piedmont Street. He died three weeks later as a result of his injuries. Witnesses described the vehicle as a gold Mazda 626 with front bumper damage. The driver was described as a black female with short to medium-length curly hair. She was wearing blue nursing scrubs.

May 24, 2015 - Investigators are asking for information about a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist that happened on May 24, 2015 on Angier Avenue near Commonwealth Street. Isidro Razo, 49, of the 3800 block of Angier Avenue was found in a ditch on Angier Avenue. Investigators believe the crash happened around 1:15 a.m. and involved a dark-colored mid-size SUV. The SUV sustained damage to the right front headlight and bumper.
