RALEIGH, N.C. -- Neighbors are in shock after police say a murder-suicide took place on the Fourth of July in the Brier Creek Neighborhood. Raleigh police are still trying to determine why it happened.

Police say around 4:25 p.m. they got a call about a shooting. When they arrived, police found 30-year-old Ashley Talarico dead from a gunshot wound. It was later determined that 34-year-old Nicholas Talarico shot and killed Ashley and later turned the gun on himself.

The Brier Creek community is in shock at the news. They say there hasn't been a situation like this here for at least 10 years. They say the family hasn't lived in the area long.

According to her website bio, Ashley ran a massage business from the house where she was murdered. It also said she has two children, ages two and five.

"I really hope the kids are all right," said neighbor Pranesh Kamalakanthan. "It's weird for me because this is so close to our street and I never expected this to be the situation."

"I'm kind of concerned because this is a good neighborhood," said Maria Collazo. "Now you have to start, you know, really making sure that everything is locked."

Raleigh police say the investigation is still ongoing.
