SANFORD, N.C. -- A 48-year-old man is dead and a 16-year-old girl is in the hospital following a shooting in Sanford on Saturday night.

  • Police say a 15 year old is the primary suspect
  • Shooting happened at house in the Jonesboro Heights neighborhood
  • Sanford police say 16 year old is in stable condition

Police say a 15 year old is their primary suspect in the incident.

That 15 year old is still on the run. Sanford police say they are going to pursue a first degree murder charge in the case.

The shooting happened at a home just steps away from Highway 421 Business in the Jonesboro Heights neighborhood.

Police say 48-year-old Monty Simmons of Sanford was shot multiple times at the house and was dead before emergency responders got there.

A 16-year-old girl, also from Sanford, was taken to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Sanford police say she's in stable condition.

Neighbors who knew Simmons say they're shocked by the shooting.

"Well, I'm hoping to have a positive outlook on things. That's what I'm hoping, for things to get better," said Sanford resident Jerome Prince.

In addition to first degree murder, the police are also pursuing charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a minor.
