PRINCETON, N.C. – Police are still investigating a fatal shooting in the Johnston County town of Princeton.

Officers say it happened around 4 p.m. Monday on South Elm Street near Second Street.

Michael Joyner was found lying dead in the road with a gunshot to the head and he was wearing body armor.

Princeton Police Chief Tyrone Sutton said Joyner, who family members said is a retired Army veteran, traveled from South Carolina in order to help his younger brother out with a disagreement with some people.

Sutton said it’s not clear at this point if the disagreement that took place with his brother is connected to the shooting.

Witnesses said an argument broke out and shots were fired -- leaving Joyner dead.

Sutton said Joyner had a fiancé who lives in South Carolina.

There are persons of interest in this case, but no suspects have officially been named.

If you have any information about the shooting, you are asked to contact the Princeton Police Department.
