CARY -- Baby + Co. in Cary is currently not conducting births at their facility following the deaths of three newborns over the past seven months.

"Every loss is tragic and we are grieving along with these families, but complications can happen in any birthing environment, hospitals or birthing centers, so we have full confidence in our model care and our outcome," said clinical director Margaret Buxton.

Wake Med is now attending to the patients who are about to deliver.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for WakeMed said " WakeMed always puts patients and their families at the top and will continue to support all mothers and babies, including those that transfer from Baby + Co. for care and resources."

The center says they have supported 1,200 pregnancies since 2014. They are now doing an outside review to make sure best practices are being followed.

"In this situation, what we are really waiting for is the opportunity to have a bigger, more comprehensive  view of our entire program of care," Buxton said.

She maintains using a birthing center is safe for expectant mothers.

"Birth centers are something a lot of people don't understand. I can absolutely tell you the birth center model of care is tried and true. It absolutely is a safe option for low-risk women," Buxton said.
