CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Chapel Hill police are looking to improve pedestrian safety on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard after two men died while crossing the road this year.

58-year-old James Keeter was struck and killed near the intersection of MLK Boulevard and Critz Drive Sunday night. A month earlier, 56-year-old Stephen Taylor died the exact same way when crossing MLK Boulevard near Westminster Street. Neither man used a crosswalk.

The Chapel Hill Police Department took extra measures to keep the road safe immediately following Keeter's death. Police say they are patrolling the road more often to catch unsafe drivers and a lighted safety sign now stands in the approximate spot where Keeter was struck.

Also, since Keeter and Taylor were both homeless, Chapel Hill PD also gave out reflective clothing to the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness.

"We knew we couldn't just reach out to them with a news release," said Chapel Hill PD spokesperson Ran Northam. "Hopefully they can improve their ways of traveling across this and other major thoroughfares."

No charges have been filed in Taylor's death. Keeter's death is still under investigation.
