GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Update: Police have released the identity of the student who was found deceased in a dorm room at ECU Wednesday afternoon.

According to the East Carolina University Police Department, Simmie Byrd of Raleigh was discovered unresponsive by her roommate in Jarvis Residence Hall at approximately 3:15 p.m.

ECU police continue to investigate the cause of death, but there is no evidence of foul play at this time.

Byrd was a freshman studying biology.

Police say a student was found dead inside of her East Carolina University residence hall Wednesday afternoon.

According to the university, she was found at around 3:15 p.m. Although investigators say there is no foul play expected, it is an active case.

The university has decided not to release the student’s name just yet, but her family and friends have been notified.

Vice chancellor for student affairs, Dr. Virginia Hardy, released a statement saying, “I am deeply saddened by the sudden loss of one of our students. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.”
