Some dentists and doctors spent their weekend giving an underserved community in Queens a reason to smile.
"Queens is full of so many different pockets of immigrant populations that don't have access to health care or don't even know how important it is to get dental and health care," said Dr. Hemali Ajmera, who is a dentist.
The Tzu Chi Foundation held their annual Community Health Day in Flushing on Sunday.
Dentists with Queens County Dental Society conducted free oral health screenings and performed basic dentistry procedures for those in attendance.
In addition, dozens of other doctors volunteered to provide other physical, mental and holistic health screenings.
The event was held to benefit those living without health insurance or those who can't afford health care.
"Flushing is the great cosmopolitan, there are a lot of immigrants that come here and a lot of them, because of language, culture they are not able and cannot afford medical or health treatment," said Dr. Kenneth Liao, the Medical Director for the Tzu Chi International Medical Association.
Affordable referral options were also given to patients who needed further medical or dental treatment.
