DURHAM- Interim Police Chief Larry Smith is said to be "concerned" over a police search that was partially captured on cell phone video.
He called a meeting Wednesday morning with five community advocates to discuss the matter. Other police commanders attended the meeting.
"Well it was a lively discussion. Tthere were some concerns in the community," says Rev. Mark-Anthony Middleton of Abundant Hope Christian Church.
Officers responded to a home on Misty Pine Avenue last week after suspecting marijuana was inside. Family members inside the home said police used excessive force and tased them, with children present. Police officials contend that the officers were assaulted and one person tried to grab the officer's gun.
"I didn't see anything in the video and many in the community haven't seen anything in the video that indicates that anybody grabbed the officers' gun," says Middleton.
"The questions that I raised were about whether the use of force was necessary in that household," says Nia Wilson of the FADE Coalition.
Advocates say Smith wouldn't say if his officers acted appropriately, but did have one concern.
"Immediate control was not gained of the house upon entry," says Middleton.
Four adults were charged in the incident. Khadir Cherry was arrested and charged with two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and/or distribute, maintaining a dwelling, two counts of assault on a government official, resisting a public officer and possession of marijuana paraphernalia. Raynell Hall was arrested and charged with assault on a government official and resisting a public officer. Jahmon Cedeno was arrested and charged with assault on a government official. Vera McGriff, the homeowner, is charged with maintaining a dwelling and resisting a public officer.
"My family has been traumatized by this incident, and I am thankful to have the community behind me," said McGriff to TWC News Tuesday at the Durham County courthouse. She later released a statement, asking for a full investigation, disbanding the police HEAT team, and firing the five officers involved.
Advocates say they're not exactly satisfied with the meeting but are encouraged that police will conduct a full investigation. No word on when it will be completed.
