NATIONAL - A U.S. surfer escaped an encounter with sharks during a competition in South Africa on Sunday.
Mick Fanning was minutes away from the final heat in the J-Bay Open Surf Competition before he caught the attention of the sharks.
A video shows two sharks circling him. He says he felt something behind him and a strong pull from beneath.
“I like instantly just jumped like a lion and it just kept coming at my board. I was just was like kicking and screaming,” said Fanning.
He had no injuries and just escaped with just a severed leash.
After the attack, organizers cleared the water and canceled the remainder of the event.
