CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolia Board of Trustees voted 10-3 on Thursday to change the name of Saunders Hall to Carolina Hall.

The building was named after UNC graduate and former trustee William Saunders, a colonel in the Civil War and a leader of the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina

The board allowed students opposed to the name to weigh in on the decision through public comments leading up to Thursday's meeting.

During the meeting, the board also declared a 16-year freeze on renaming historical buildings, monuments, memorials and landscapes.
