NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. -- Drivers who use the 4x4 beach access on North Topsail beach can no longer enjoy it for free.
On Wednesday, a new rule requiring vehicle access permits officially went into effect.
The town says the area has grown in popularity causing excessive traffic at Access #3 on River Road.
Now, there's a need for additional beach maintenance, law enforcement and public safety.
The town hopes charging for vehicle beach access will generate enough revenue to cover those costs.
As of 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, 38 annual permits had already been sold online for $100 each.
Drivers can also opt to pay a daily rate of $20 at the kiosk or using the Pay Mobile App.
