DAVIDSON -- Dozens of Davidson residents are fighting to preserve nearly 20 acres of trees.
Town Commissioners bought the land from a private citizen in 1985 and they haven't touched the property in decades. Now they're reviewing plans for a new mixed-used development with commerical and residental space.
Members of Save Davidson aren't happy with the proposal.
"We don't want a hotel in the heart of a residential area. It doesn't make sense in that location,” said Denise Beall, an organizer with Save Davidson. “It would be different if it was a new community theater, a daycare center."
Beall said the group believes commissioners aren't respecting the former owner's vision for the land which was a community park.
"It’s very evident in all the documents they talk about the park property and that's not being followed through and I just wonder how she envisoned it when she was witting it up with her son."
But Davidson officials say they’re listening to these concerns.
“We have from citizens both for and against this proposal and we appreciate all the feedback we have received,” said Jamie Justice, Davidson Town Manager.
Commissioners were supposed to vote on these plans Tuesday night but now they're delaying their final decision.
"Board of Commissioners are taking more time to further discuss with the developer and consider this proposal to ensure it's the best it can be to benefit all citizens of Davidson,” said Justice.
At this time, town officials don't know when they'll take a final vote on the proposal.
