BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Two Rivers Church is used to unusual events, but what happened Sunday was like nothing they had ever experienced when a 69-year-old woman drove her vehicle into the side of their building on Conklin Avenue.
"The whole ground just shook," said Esther Reynolds, a Two Rivers Church member. "There was a really loud boom."
The building is home to multiple church congregations, including Two Rivers Church and First Baptist Church.
"You don't know how long you have," said Will Hampton, Two Rivers Church lead pastor. "As I was getting ready to preach that, I heard what sounded like a lightning bolt hit the building. I thought, 'Aw man, what is going on?'"
Members rushed to help rescue the woman from the vehicle.
"They climbed into the vehicle and helped her out," said Hampton. "Because of the two front doors, she was kind of trapped in the vehicle. So two of the guys from Two Rivers Church helped her out of the vehicle. They're trained EMTs."
Normally the church holds classes in the room where the car crashed, but luckily last month, the class schedule changed.
"That's the room I used to teach in just a few weeks back until we changed some of the times, so the room was thankfully empty," said Kerry Krissel, Two Rivers Church pastor of spiritual formation. "Had they been in there, there would've been a whole bunch of people who would be severely hurt."
Witnesses say the woman belonged to another congregation in the building. She had to be taken to the hospital.
"I really hope this person is OK because it like broke through bricks, so I was really worried for that person. I just hope they're going to be OK," said Reynolds.
Engineers have marked the area safe, but congregation members worry it may be a while before they are able to resume services in the building.
"We're a mobile church, so we'll just find another place to meet maybe the Discovery Center or some other place in the meantime and then if the building is usable again, we'll go have services here," said Hampton.
Members are praying for a complete fix so they can return to their church home soon.
