AUSTIN, Texas -- Sunday marks the 60th anniversary of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson.
- Three rising music stars killed in plane crash
- Two were from Texas
- Waylon Jennings almost boarded flight
The event has since been known as “The Day The Music Died” after being referenced in the song “American Pie,” released in 1971 by singer-songwriter Don McLean. Holly was from Lubbock, Texas, and Richardson was from Sabine Pass, Texas.
Waylon Jennings, of Littlefield, Texas, was part of Holly’s band. He almost boarded the flight but gave his seat to Richardson, who had the flu.
