Among the crowds of the massive TCS New York City Marathon were two brothers from Staten Island.

"One year I ended up having the day off from work and I said, 'let me go help them out,'" said Steven Guadalupe, our Staten Islander of the Week.

Steven and Christopher Guadalupe volunteered at last year's race.

The Mariners Harbor natives say it was an experience they will never forget.

"You're there at 4:30 in the morning so you're watching the sun rise over the Verrazano Bridge," said Steven.

Together, they made sure the participants were in the right place at the right time for the start of the race.

"To meet different types of runners, different people from around the world, it's just a great experience to get around and get in the community," said Christopher Guadalupe, our Staten Islander of the Week.

Steven and Christopher started volunteering with the New York Road Runners in 2014

The nonprofit hosts races and community events throughout the year in all five boroughs.

Leaders say the show couldn't go on without the help of volunteers.

"Supporting runners, they cheer them on, they give out water, they're there - they are sort of like the heart and soul of the race," said Michael Schnall of NYRR.

Road Runners says Staten Islanders makeup just 2 percent of their total volunteer efforts citywide.

With that in mind, the brothers are on a mission to recruit more people from the borough.

And they're off to a good start. They've already secured more than 20 volunteers so far this year.

"Steven heard the call and he came running and then recruited his brother and some other people who he's involved with and people he knows, his neighbors, and so that's been really helpful in bringing in a new crop of volunteers," said NYRR Director of Volunteer Operations Nancy Lipsey.

Steven also volunteered as radio operator at this year's Boston Marathon.

Here on Staten Island, the brothers started their own volunteer emergency response team.

They are also troop leaders with the Boy Scouts of America.

"I'm an Eagle scout so I mean it's my way of giving back to the kids that are taking the same path I did as a youth," said Chris.

And so, for thinking of others every step of the way, the Guadalupe brothers are our Staten Islanders of the Week.
