Senior Amanda Gomez has pushed through the pain to reach her goals and earn top grades. Our Alese Underwood takes us to Robert E. Lee High School to meet a volleyball player with big dreams.
SAN ANTONIO -- For Amanda, volleyball has always played a big part in her life.
"We bond really well together as a team. We're always really family-like and pretty much like sisters all together," she said.
As the team's setter, she touches the ball every play and has a lot to do.
"She's a really good leader. She has a great demeanor, she can be funny she can be serious also and I think the other girls really appreciate her attitude on the court, she's very coachable," said Lee High School Volleyball Coach Veronica Gomez.
She's kept a good attitude even when the sport and her body weren't so supportive.
"I have problems with my knee sometimes so I was always treating them, getting them better, working on them and stuff like that," said Amanda.
Amanda stayed positive and says it was meant to be.
"I was in the trainer's a lot my freshmen year and it just became like home," she said.
It became so much like home, she took it upon herself to volunteer as the boy's basketball manager and as a member of the athletic training staff.
"She is really good about making her schedule work with both because she can get really busy. We play volleyball during football season and there's a lot of training going on then, so she really works her schedule well," said Gomez.
It's not just her athletic schedule to worry about. Amanda has a 4.0 GPA.
"I just kept on trying. My goal for my sophomore year was to be summa cum laude so now my senior year I have that," she said.
She knows she'll need high grades to eventually fulfill her goal of becoming a physical therapist.
"Going into athletic training I never even thought it was going to be something I did later on in life, but every single game and injury that I've ever had to deal with like pushed me towards that," she said.
With college right around the corner, Amanda hopes to leave a lasting impression of both team work and hard work.
"Always try to find what's good and even if it seems like it's impossible, just be like, 'Well it's my lesson in life, I'll get through it,'" she said.
