They argued the defendant had every intention of murdering Russo when he stabbed her more than 20 times in the chest and stomach on Sept. 29, 2022.

“It was disturbing to hear how many times she was stabbed, what organs he hit, and watch him run down the street and target her,” Danielle Fuoco, Russo’s daughter, said. “It’s unfortunate that this had to happen especially to someone like her who did nothing but save people her entire life basically and then this guy does this.”

Fuoco attended the trial wearing her mother’s uniform shirt while sitting among dozens of members of FDNY EMS members.

“What we’re looking for is an expeditious trial,” Anthony Almojera, vice president of the FDNY EMS Officers Union Local 3621, said. “The man is guilty. He deserves to do his time.”

According to officials, Zisopoulos faces two charges — murder in second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

In their opening statements, defense attorneys questioned the evidence the prosecution laid out, while introducing the possibility that some tampering may have occurred with witness and surveillance video.

They reminded the jury that the prosecution had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that their client intended to kill Russo, which they insisted he did not.

The 25-year-veteran of the FDNY died after being stabbed multiple times in an unprovoked attack outside of the station house where she worked in Astoria, Queens.

Several witnesses called by the prosecution on Monday identified Zisopoulos as the person they either witnessed during the attack or afterwards when he was apprehended by police.

Russo’s daughter said her mother not only saved lives, but lived her own life to the fullest.

“She lived in St. Croix,” Fuoco said. “She lived in Barbados. She would take her boards down. She used to wind surf. We used to rent houses out east in the Hamptons with all her windsurfing friends. I remember she joined the fire department probably when I was in high school.”
