The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in the town of Great Valley in Cattaraugus County on Monday.

As residents began cleanup on Tuesday, officials from the NWS Survey team were in Great Valley to determine if it was a tornado and on what scale it touched down. Their storm survey confirmed damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado with maximum winds of 110 mph.

The worst may be over, but the cleanup of the debris left behind in its path is just beginning, as neighbors in the community are literally picking up the pieces.

The storm blew roofs and siding off houses, knocked down power lines, flipped vehicles on their side and uprooted large trees.

"I have about a 20’ x 20’ section of roof that got ripped off and we're trying to get that buttoned up today,” said resident Peter Sunderland. “And that is my car [trapped under a tree.] I can't get it out yet, so I have no vehicle to get going, so, we'll get it all taken care of pretty soon."

Town leaders, Cattaraugus County’s Emergency Services and the NWS are all surveying the damage.

"What struck me with the damage of this, is the width of the damage and the consistency of the tree damage itself,” said Mike Fries, meteorologist, National Weather Service Buffalo. “We saw very consistent tree damage, impressive tree damage, across most of the area that we surveyed."

There were no injuries reported from this storm, according to town officials.
