SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. - The investigation continues into the death of a young girl in Southbridge who reportedly died after falling out of a third-story window.

12-year old Arya LeBeau passed away on Saturday following injuries she sustained on Friday night. Initial reports suggest she fell from a third-story window.

A week later, memorial still sits outside the apartment complex on Village Drive in Southbridge where the tragedy happened.

While authorities are investigating the incident, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office is calling it an unattended death.

In a post online, her mother said she can’t express the grief she feels but thanks the community for their support.

While the case has been turned over to the state’s medical examiner and an autopsy is pending, Spectrum News 1 asked Southbridge Fire Chief Paul Normandin Jr. about window safety.

Normandin didn’t want to comment on the ongoing investigation and tragic incident but says, from a fire perspective, windows need to be properly maintained and functioning in the event of an emergency.

“Obviously, on upper floors to higher levels, those windows should be used to escape fires and or situations that the main egress area is blocked from," Normandin said. "If you do not own your property, it is very important that you let your landlord know that you have nonfunctioning windows, as things like that I've described already, those things are needed.

Arya’s funeral will be held on Monday with calling hours on Sunday night.
