One of the officers charged in connection with the death of Messiah Nantwi at Mid-State Correctional Facility has pleaded guilty to the charges his faced.

Joshua Bartlett was one of 10 people indicted in the case. He pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution and falsifying business records.

Bartlett admitted in court Friday to trying to cover up the incident that led to Nantwi's death, which occurred near the Marcy Correctional Facility, where authorities say the use of force by correction officers led to the death of Robert Brooks just months earlier.

Bartlett is the only person charged in the case to accept a plea deal at this point.

The indictment says Nantwi was pronounced dead March 1 at Wynn Hospital in Utica after beatings by correction officers at Mid-State.

According to the indictment, the National Guard, which was on scene as the three-week strike by correction officers was ongoing at the time, requested assistance to deal with an unknown issue with an incarcerated individual. A Mid-State CERT (Corrections Emergency Response Team), the defendants in this case, responded and were directed to a room where Nantwi was. The indictment said the CERT team had no clear understanding why a CERT response was necessary and when Levi and Blair entered the room, “began beating Messiah Nantwi, including multiple strikes to his body and head with their boots.”

Bartlett is set to be sentenced Aug. 8.

Several officers from Marcy Correctional Facility have been charged with causing Brooks' death.
