The Buffalo Common Council has formally adopted a resolution asking the administration to make May 14 a citywide day of service.
"It is our job to remember these victims in action rather than just mourning," Councilwoman Leah Halton-Pope said during the council's Tuesday meeting. "We serve to honor those 10 lives that were stolen from our community and if they were still here, they would still be doing a lot of the things that we have the opportunity to do, so this resolution asks that we recognize each of those 10 by doing something of service for one another in this City of Good Neighbors. We have the opportunity to show that their lives meant something more. As we mourn them every year, let us take time for acts of service for one another as we've shown in the city of Buffalo, we love on one another and we look out for each other - our diversity is our strength and our ability to see beyond race and our socio-economic status means something to each of us, so I ask that my colleagues support this resolution."
The council is calling on the city to close City Hall for regular business each year and are encouraging city employees to take part in community service projects, education programs or other similar events.
The Buffalo Common Council Central Staff office is closed on May 14. Normal office hours will resume Thursday.
