MILWAUKEE — With defaulted college loans set to return to collections in a matter of days, student aid advisers across the country are working to help current and former students navigate what could be a rocky financial road ahead.
"Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites, possibly, are in default right now," said Zack Goodwin, the assistant vice president for student financial aid at Marquette University. "[They may also be] delinquent, 90 or more days, meaning default isn't very far in the future."
For current or past students worried about potentially having their wages garnished, Goodwin said there are options out there to try and help.
"If a student is in default on multiple federal student loans, they can leave default by simply consolidating those loans at StudentAid.gov," Goodwin said. "If they don't have that option because they only have one loan that they're in default on, they can visit the Default Resolution Group at the Department of Education."
Defaulted loans could go to collections starting May 5.
