LEXINGTON, Ky. — While around 150,000 people usually attend Churchill Downs on Derby Day, millions will watch the event worldwide. In Kentucky, many other horse tracks are inviting people to come out and take in Derby 151 there.
Of course, the Kentucky Derby happens at Churchill Downs in Louisville, but it’s a statewide celebration. Keeneland Racetrack in Lexington, is preparing to host one of the largest Derby watch parties in central Kentucky on Saturday.
The historic racetrack expects to host at least 10,000 people to celebrate Kentucky Derby 151. Thursday crews were getting the track party ready.
“Derby is kind of like the Christmas of horse racing, we all get so excited,” said Kara Heissenbuttel, senior director of community relations at Keeneland.
It’s become a tradition for many central Kentuckians; a day full of live music, food trucks, children’s activities, drinks and, of course, betting. Fashion recommended.
“We will have a hat contest, and they can come, dress to the nines just like they’re going to Churchill Downs and we’ll give away some really fun prizes,” Heissenbuttel said.
Heissenbuttel said Churchill’s connections to central Kentucky run deep.
“A lot of these Derby horses are born and raised here, a lot of them may have raced here, over the years we have had a lot of Derby Winners come through our sales ring and so it’s just exciting to bring it all back together.”
General admission tickets are just $10, fans can also tailgate on The Hill, no reservation required.
Keeneland will also offer a drive-thru betting option on Friday and Saturday behind Keeneland’s entertainment center. Anyone wishing to bet without leaving their car should enter through Gate at Man O’ War Boulevard.
