When the Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System is tested at 11:45 a.m. May 1, two new sirens will join the monthly all-hazard warning siren test in Waikoloa Village.

The new sirens were recently installed at Puu Nui Park and Kamakoa Nui Park.

“These new sirens are a welcomed addition to our island's emergency notification system,” said County of Hawaii Mayor Kimo Alameda in a release. “They represent another step forward in keeping our communities informed and safe. During an emergency, timely alerts can make all the difference, and these sirens will help ensure that our residents can take action when it matters most.”

During the monthly tests, sirens are activated for one minute. During an actual emergency, sirens activate for three minutes, alerting residents to seek more information.

If the public hears a siren sound outside of a scheduled test, turn on the radio, television or check your cell phone for any emergency messages.

County officials encourage residents to report the results of the monthly siren test to help officials identify operating or malfunctioning sirens. Report the performance of a siren during a test.

Residents can also sign up to receive emergency notifications by email, text message and recorded message on the phone through the Everbridge notification system. Create an account and select which alert method you prefer.
