JEFFERSON, Ohio — Jefferson Area Local School District closed Friday because of health and safety concerns at two elementary schools.
The district said a rash outbreak between Jefferson Elementary and Rock Creek Elementary students led to the decision to close, according to a news release. The district notified the Ashtabula County Health Department as it became aware of the rise of students experiencing the rash.
"While the exact cause of the rash is still unknown, it appears to be viral and contagious," the district said in the release. "The closure will provide time to thoroughly disinfect and sanitize all school buildings and buses and implement additional safety precautions to help prevent further spread."
Parents are advised to monitor their children for symptoms and to contact their doctor or health care provider is concerns arise.
"We are taking this situation seriously and want to ensure a safe learning environment for all students and staff," the district said. "Closing school allows us to take swift action to protect our school community."
School is expected to resume on Monday, April 28.
