The Hawaii Department of Health has issued several Brown Water Advisories for areas along Maui’s west side.
The affected areas as of early Thursday morning include Baby Beach to Launiupoko, McGregor Point to Maalaea Harbor, Kealia Pond to Cove Park, and Kamaole Beach Park I.
DOH advises all beach goers to stay out of brown or murky water, especially after storms or heavy rain since it could contain “higher than normal pollutant levels.” Officials recommend people stay out of the water for 48 to 72 hours after the rain has stopped and the beach has received full sunshine.
Do not swim, wade or drink water from any freshwater streams or ponds to prevent leptospirosis, a bacterial infection caused by the Leptospira bacteria.
