A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer is recovering after a head-on crash with another vehicle early Wednesday morning.

  •  Officers were looking for a vehicle that fled a traffic stop when the crash happened

  • The suspect was taken into custody

The wreck happened just before 2 a.m. on Winterfield Place.

Officers were trying to stop a vehicle displaying a fake license plate, CMPD said, when the suspect fled and started driving without headlights.

While officers were searching the area, the suspect collided head on with an officer’s car.

CMPD said the officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The officer has since been released and is recovering.

The suspect was taken into custody, but has not been identified at this time.
