SWAIN COUNTY, N.C. – As the Alarka Fire continues to grow in Swain County, emergency responders and local officials are calling on the community to help support the men and women on the frontlines.
As of Friday, 80 to 90 firefighters are working long days in harsh conditions as they try to contain the blaze. To help these first responders, Swain County Emergency Management has launched a care package donation drive, asking residents to contribute essential items to these firefighters.
Donations can be dropped off at the Family Resource Center (300 Hughes Branch Rd.), Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Firefighters working in extreme heat and smoke require high-energy, portable snacks and hygiene items. The most requested supplies include:
Protein bars, trail mix, beef jerky, nuts, and dried fruit
Electrolyte drink packets (Liquid I.V., Gatorade)
Candy (heat-resistant), gum and mints
Canned coffee, energy drinks (Monster, Red Bull)
Baby wipes, hand sanitizer and unscented lotion
Sunscreen, lip balm with SPF and eye drops
Foot powder, wool socks (new) and cooling towels
Thank-you cards or notes of encouragement
With the fires still active, officials stress that continued community support is critical. Swain County residents are encouraged to spread the word and contribute what they can. For more information or questions, residents can contact Melissa Barker at 828-488-7505.
