Officials ordered evacuations Wednesday afternoon in Swain County as a 1,000-acre wildfire continues to grow in the Alarka community.
The blaze was moving toward Frye Mountain, Shepherd’s Creek and Conley’s Creek, the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management said. It was 0% contained.
Residents who need to evacuate were being contacted directly, officials said.
The wildfire is the latest among of several burning in western North Carolina as dry and breezy conditions continue.
More than 6,000 acres have been consumed by at least three wildfires in Polk and Henderson counties.
A statewide ban on open burning remains in effect.
Alarka is about 70 miles west of Asheville.
