STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — A New London volunteer fireman died Wednesday in a single-car crash, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Christopher Rothmeyer, 27, of New London, drove off N.C. 8 at a high speed in a white Chevrolet Camaro and ran head-on into a tree at 9:30 a.m. near New London, officials said. He was responding to another crash at the time.

Rothmeyer had been serving with Stanly County since 2016 with New London Volunteer Fire Department, Bethany Community Volunteer Fire Department and Stanly County EMS.

The Highway Patrol said he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

The road was closed for two hours.
