North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson said the state is investigating last year’s PowerSchool data breach.
The vendor incident affected over 62 million current and former students and teachers across the country, including 4 million North Carolinians.
“I’m investigating PowerSchool to determine if they broke any laws in this process, and I’ll take additional legal action if necessary,” Jackson said Thursday. He said organizations failing to properly protect information will be held accountable.
A hacker gained access to sensitive information to PowerSchool in December. Though law enforcement officials and PowerSchool monitored the dark web and other online marketplaces where that sensitive data might’ve been sold, it’s unknown exactly what was exposed.
“In 2024, more than 2,258 businesses, hospitals, government agencies and other organizations reported data breaches to the North Carolina Department of Justice — the most in state history,” the N.C. Department of Justice said. “Those data breaches also impacted a record-breaking 6,680,896 North Carolinians.”
