MILWAUKEE — A new report from ProPublica details the long wait for both documented and undocumented immigrants in Wisconsin, now dealing with heightened uncertainty as President Donald Trump continues to threaten mass deportations across the country.

“There’s a mix of immigrants whom I’ve been speaking with who are from Nicaragua in Wisconsin,” said Melissa Sanchez, a reporter with ProPublica. “Some are undocumented like you said, and some have different statuses that they’ve received over the past few years — many started to come here a decade ago to work on dairy farms.”

Sanchez said many of these immigrants are now packing up things they’ve bought while working in the United States to send back to family, even though they, too, may have to return to their home country. That comes despite the ongoing global strife, which forced them to leave in the first place.

“The country of Nicaragua has been dealing with a lot of political and economic upheaval,” Sanchez said. “That’s one of the big reasons that people have left that country.”
