Wintry precipitation fell across the state Tuesday night, creating a rare scene Wednesday morning in eastern North Carolina.

Road crews often have to plow sand off of roads at the Outer Banks, but they’ll be plowing snow Wednesday. Up to 8 inches has fallen near Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks.

"The snow is just now winding down across the Outer Banks, but it is still very windy and very cold, and roads across the area can best be described as treacherous. Our crews are out plowing and salting primary routes, but the best advice we have for motorists today is stay home," North Carolina Department of Transportation officals said Wednesday morning.

State officials said in a news conference Tuesday that no ice is safe to walk on, adding that ponds and other bodies of water may be frozen over in this rare weather event.

Because of potential power grid stress on Wednesday, everyone is asked to minimize energy usage at home. According to Gov. Stein, some examples of energy conservation include reducing thermostat settings and postponing laundry until temperatures rise.
