ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – A police officer shot and killed a man suspected in a fatal shooting early Saturday morning, the Elizabeth City Police Department said.

The officer was on foot patrol when he heard gunshots near the 200 block of Poindexter Street just before 2 a.m., officials said in a statement on social media Saturday afternoon. The officer encountered an armed man and told him to drop his weapon. When the suspect did not comply, the officer shot him, police said.

The suspect was identified as Bryan Christopher White, 33, of Belvidere, N.C., which is west of Elizabeth City. Police said White was a suspect in the shooting of Cory Christopher Revelle, 39, of Elizabeth City.

Officers arriving at the scene found Revelle, and they rendered aid to him and White. Both men were taken to a hospital, where they died of their injuries, officials said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting, police said.

The department planned a news conference at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Municipal Building.
