VALLEY MILLS, Texas — Last month, a 34-year-old Texas man and his son were struck by lightning while walking home from a bus stop.

The man, Matthew Boggs, was killed in the strike. One of his sons, 6-year-old Grayson Boggs, died from injuries on June 16, according to a GoFundMe account set up to help with medical expenses.

The child was holding his dad’s hand when the lightning hit as his 11-year-old brother watched on in horror, according to AccuWeather.

Matthew Boggs’ other son was not injured.

According to the GoFundMe page, Grayson had been battling his injuries at Children’s Hospital in Temple, Texas. The lightning strike occurred in nearby Valley Mills.

Bosque County Deputies and North Bosque EMS responded to the scene a little after 5 p.m. on May 17 and found Matthew Boggs dead from the lightning strike. A news release from the sheriff’s department reported Grayson Boggs to have been unresponsive, but still breathing at the time.

“Texas ranks second in the nation, behind Florida, in terms of lightning fatalities with 19 in the past 10 years,” lightning safety specialist John Jensenius stated in a press release. “However, the last known lightning fatality in Texas occurred almost 3 years ago on July 2, 2020, when a 16-year-old boy was struck outside his home.”
