The Greensboro Fiire Department says it has received more resignations this year than previous years. Reasons for leaving vary, including retirement, career changes and moving to other departments for more money.

“We're always having people retire out. You know, they serve their time and, you know, they're moving onto other things. So it's just bringing in that next generation of folks,” Battalion Chief Korey Randleman said.

Fire officials add that when the economy is in good standing, recruitment tends to be lower as many people are working in the private sector. But when the economy is suffering, recruitment numbers rise as many people move from the private sector to work in local government.

“There's been a lot of shortages throughout. We're in the same boat as is everybody else, a lot of other smaller departments are feeling it as well,” Randleman said.

There are 19 recruits who are a part of the 78th academy class. There are 24 vacancies Greenbsoro fire officials say they are still working to fill.
