HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — The long-running aftermath of a Valrico shooting has finally worked its way through the court system.

Trevor Dooley, now 80, has finally accepted responsibility for killing David James on a Valrico basketball court in September 2010.

Dooley pleaded guilty to shooting and killing James, 41, after an argument about neighborhood kids using the court to skateboard. The shooting took place in front of James’ daughter – who was 8 years old at the time.

At a hearing Tuesday, prosecutors accepted a plea agreement with Dooley with approval by the James family. Dooley has now been found guilty and will serve an additional three years of probation on top of the two years in prison he has already served.

He will not serve any more prison time.

Dooley had been found guilty in 2012 of manslaughter but that conviction was overturned due to the stand your ground defense.

Dooley had been set for a new trial in the coming weeks but this plea deal brings the case to end and also keeps the James family from reliving another trial.
