BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is celebrating another milestone in its $160 million expansion project.
Museum officials and elected leaders gathered Wednesday at a Topping Out ceremony for the new Jeffery E. Gundlach Building.
Crews placed the final steel beam in the buildings frame, allowing for work to begin on pouring concrete floors and, eventually, installing a glass curtain wall.
The ongoing project is set to double the museum’s size with a new education wing, underground parking, increased greenspace and a town square area.
Museum leaders say they also completed a study showing the expansion will have a total economic impact of $270 million in the area.
“We are about one year from the completion of this project that will make Buffalo and our community so proud, will create jobs and prosperity for the people who live here and will be an attraction for people from all across the world who will want to come and visit us,” gallery director Dr. Janne Siren said.
When the Albright-Knox reopens in 2022, it will welcome visitors under a new name – The Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
