GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro is now home to the only Styrofoam recycling operation in the entire state.
It took many years of effort and collaboration to create the recycling site stored at Tiny House Community Development on West Gate City Boulevard.
Volunteers dispose of Styrofoam in an environmentally friendly way, turning foam into household products and building materials that will also raise money to fight homelessness. Volunteer David Gilbert says the ultimate goal is to keep Styrofoam waste out of our landfills
“It takes up so much space, and that’s the issue with landfills, right now all Styrofoam in this area tends to go to our landfills, and it is filling up the landfill," Gilbert says.
The site only accepts #6 Styrofoam, which does not include packing peanuts or flexible foam sheets. Items like egg cartons, foam plates, take-out boxes, bowls, and cups are accepted. Foam must be clean, dry, and free of labels and tape. The recycling dropoff boxes are open 24/7.
