KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — A Triad woman says the “Don’t Tread On Me” flag at Triad Park in Kernersville does not represent what it once did during the American Revolution.
Megan Theresa felt inspired to write to administrators with Triad Park and ask them to consider taking down the Gadsden flag after seeing the flag held by rioters at the Capitol on January 6.
She believes historically, the connotations are not negative. However, the flag has been given a new meaning of white supremacy and a lack of inclusion.
“It just reminded me of how my family, new to this area, avoids this park because of this flag, and I don’t think it’s a decision to honor the veterans or be inclusive of people of color or families. I think it it’s a decision that if we want to honor the spirit of the veterans, then we make the park inclusive," Theresa says.
Deputy county manager of Forsyth County Damon Sanders-Pratt says he cannot speak to why other people are carrying the flag. He did add that at the Carolina Field of Honor it's intended to recognize and celebrate of the military service of the continental Marines and continental Navy that fought to establish the United States.
