LEXINGTON, N.C. — Senior services departments are putting a new emphasis on checking on seniors in our neighborhoods, and explaining how easy it can be.
Davidson County recently launched the "Like a Good Neighbor" campaign to help people come up with ideas.
They recommend grocery shopping for seniors in your community, dropping off an activity packet on their front porch, or bringing by your pet to help put a smile on their face.
“It’s not a huge effort that you have to do,” says Christie Smith, the Davidson County Senior Center manager. “I think it’s more of the folks, they just know that someone cares about them. They know that they’re not alone, that they’re not isolated. It’s the human connection that they’re missing.”
Davidson County also started “friendly face visits” back in June, where senior center staff visit seniors around the county.
They bring them an activity packet and a small gift, but most importantly, they spend a few minutes of quality time with them.
“It’s so important that we don’t forget our seniors,” says Kelly Baldwin, the senior activities coordinator. “We go out and just let them know that they are valued and they are valued members of our community.”
