GREENSBORO, N.C. — Back in December, Michelle Gethers-Clark, president of the United Way of Greater Greensboro, received an unexpected call.
The nonprofit was one of 384 across the country receiving large donations from MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
The UWGG got $10 million, which is the largest gift in the organization's 98 year history.
“This community really earned the $10 million grant, and we are blessed enough to be the organization that received the investment in order to invest back in the community," Gethers-Clark says.
She says the money will make a big difference, speeding up projects and initiatives from five years to completion in just two or three.
Gethers-Clark adds the local community was instrumental in keeping them going during 2020, but this gift just helps add to all the work they can do to help those in need.
“In the midst of 2020, for anybody to think about their neighbor I think really speaks to our shared humanity," Gethers-Clark says. "People still care about their neighbors.”
