NORTH CAROLINA -- Crews are working along the Business 40 project, changing exit sign numbers.

  • Once the project is reopened, Business 40 will no longer exist
  • Crews changed exit numbers, but not the exit street name
  • Crews plan to close one lane in either direction of the highway between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

"The new exit numbers will -- for Salem Parkway -- follow the US 421 route. We have to replace the old Business 40 exit numbers," says Larry Shaver, and engineer with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Once the project is reopened, Business 40 will no longer exist. It will become U.S. 421/Salem Parkway.

Crews changed exit numbers, but not the exit street name.

"The biggest thing we want to say to the drivers is to be patient with us," says Shaver. "This is going to take more than one night to do. There's going to be times where you're going to see the new exit number followed by an old exit number that we just haven't gotten to yet," he said.

Crews began the work at U.S. 52, working eastward on Business 40 to Sandy Ridge Road in Guilford County. Once completed, crews will move to the westbound side.

Crews plan to close one lane in either direction of the highway between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
