GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro dedicated its first-ever, all-women built home on Saturday.

Women Build 2019 began in the spring, bringing together a diverse group of 17 construction teams to build a five bedroom home in the White Oaks Heights area. On Saturday, they dedicated the 1,500 square foot home to a family of seven. Volunteer Penny Smith says there is something empowering about women working together.

"This project was almost like locking arms with sisters from other misters. We didn't know each other, but we came together for a great cause and it has been a wonderful experience," Smith said.

Chief operating officer for Habitat for Humanity, Ruthie Richardson-Robinson, says the Women Build project started back in 1991. She says the global non-profit housing organization saw it as an opportunity to not only build neighborhoods, but to help women learn new trades.

"It was an opportunity to show the world that women can do construction, women rock, and so it was an opportunity for women to come together and empower other women, empower children and empower families," Richardson-Robinson said.

Many volunteers showed up to the house dedication like Daintry O'Brien, she explained that it was not easy but there was a lot of support.

"Building a house and pounding nails and laying floors and putting siding on is something most of our members have never done before, so it was an opportunity for all of us reach and expand our talents," O'Brien said.

Trades that have turned into new opportunities for a family, and a strong bond between women that is unbreakable.
