NEW YORK - The famed "Crack is Wack" mural in Manhattan is getting a make over.

A team of artists is restoring Keith Haring's work off Second Avenue and 128th Street.

They are trying to remove air bubbles and redo parts of the mural where the paint is peeling.

Haring originally painted a mural with that message during the crack epidemic in the 1980s but did it without permission. He was fined, but then the city Parks Department asked him to create an even bigger version of it a couple of weeks later.

Haring wasnt just a tagger, he also contributed to work in locations across the world including Times Square.

"He was an activist. So it's great to have some of his mural restored so the next generation can enjoy it just like the generation before," said Louise Hunnicutt, an artist working on the restoration project.

It's unclear when the new project will be available for viewing. According to the parks department website it will not be accessible during construction on Harlem River Drive.

That project is not expected to wrap up until the end of 2020.
