GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- As families do their back to school shopping this year, they'll see an unconventional style of backpack on shelves nationwide.

  • Bulletproof bags have been popping up at Office Max and Office Depot stores around the country.
  • The backpacks come with a hefty price tag, anywhere from $120 to $300.
  • Labels claim the bag can stop a bullet from a .44 magnum handgun, but it will not stop a high-velocity rifle.

Bulletproof bags have been popping up at Office Max and Office Depot stores around the country.

Until just recently, you could only buy them online.

Guilford County School District leaders say they're not relying on students having bulletproof backpacks to protect them.

It's why they prepare for active shooter situations.

"Somebody panicking in an active shooter scenario, I don't know how reliable that is," said Byron Gladden of the district. "You're probably not even thinking about grabbing your backpack as a shield and running with all of that, because we have protocols in place in the event of an active shooting that children follow a protocal."
